Labuschagne 'happy' to open as he eyes Test return

Marnus Labuschagne has revealed that he would be happy to open the batting for Australia if that's the way forward for him to return to the Test XI. One of the consistent batters over the years for Australia, Labuschagne has struggled for form off late in red-ball cricket that led to him being axed for the recent West Indies tour.

While he is expected to feature in the ODI XI this month against South Africa, especially after the retirements of Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell from the format, Labuschagne is eyeing a swift return to the Test squad with a home Ashes series scheduled this summer. With Cameron Green slotting in at No.3 in West Indies, Labuschagne's favoured position, the 31-year-old's best bet could be right up top especially with young Sam Konstas not making his chance count in the three Tests.

"If you had asked me where I prefer to bat, obviously I have batted at three my whole career, but at this stage you don't get a choice," Labuschagne admitted to News Corp. "I opened in the World Test Championship final and felt I batted quite well. I got in but did not go on with it. I would be happy to do that. I would love to. If opener is where I need to bat to be playing in the Test team, that's fine."

The moment he was told that he would be left out, Labuschagne's immediate thoughts were on the Ashes series with Australia not scheduled to play any Tests prior to that. To strengthen his case now, Labuschagne will also have three Sheffield Shield games before the marquee series apart from the ODIs. "It was tough because you never want to be dropped," he looked back. "But almost as soon as their (selectors) words came out my mind shifted straight away to, 'Okay, how am I playing the Ashes ... how do I make that happen?'."

However, being left out gave Labuschagne an opportunity to sit back and reflect on his game, as per his own admission. "This has given me an opportunity to reflect and not having the pressure of the media saying, 'Marnus has got to go', he said. "I mean that's part of the game. There is a tipping point but it's something I thrive on... proving the doubters wrong and being able to find a way. Missing those West Indies Tests gave me the chance to back and think, 'This is where I want to be and this is how I'm going to get there'."

You’ll all be proud of War 2: NTR tells his fans

The grand pre-release event of Hrithik Roshan and NTR’s highly anticipated pan-India action spy thriller, War 2, was held in Hyderabad on Sunday evening, with a sea of fans cheering for Tarak and Hrithik. The landmark event has given the much-needed boost to War 2 ahead of its release on August 14.

NTR’s speech at the event reflected his confidence in War 2. He raised both his collars and assured his fans that they will be proud of the movie. He said that War 2’s producer, Aditya Chopra, was the main reason for him to sign War 2. “Aditya Chopra garu told me, ‘Your fans will be proud of War 2,'” said the Young Tiger.

NTR also showered praises on his War 2 co-star and idol Hrithik Roshan. “25 years ago, I didn’t know any dancer except Michael Jackson. But when I watched Kaho Na Pyar Hai, I was blown away by Hrithik sir’s dance and performance. “Hrithik sir is among the greatest actors and dancers in India,” NTR said.

Talking about War 2’s director, Ayan Mukerji, NTR said that Ayan spent countless sleepless nights perfecting the film. NTR also dropped exciting hints at key twists in War 2, urging fans to not reveal those twists after watching the movie. Reflecting on his 25-year film career, NTR also remembered how his fans stood by him over the years and promised to entertain them forever.

Anyone who knows Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, General Upendra Dwivedi, or Admiral Dinesh Tripathi will realize that they are all apolitical yet unafraid to speak their minds to the political leadership when it comes to national security. ACM Singh is a classic test fighter pilot who lives for the day and could not care less if the political leadership gets upset with his bindass attitude. General Dwivedi is a typical OG, dyed-in-wool green, most comfortable when with his troops. He is shy to a point but asserts himself when required and can be ruthless. Admiral Tripathi is a total badass who believes in the lethal power of the Navy and was ready to wipe out Karachi port on the morning of May 10—until the Pakistani DGMO pleaded for peace.

They report to a national security team headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan. One common denominator with all four is that they know how to walk a razor’s edge and have the daring to take any decision when it comes to national security—ready to face the consequences. On the morning of May 10, while appreciating the Indian armed forces’ response, PM Modi congratulated Gen Dwivedi and ACM Singh. He did not account for other hard evidence. National security planners and intelligence agencies know that a hangar housing C-130 Hercules VVIP transport aircraft was hit hard at Chaklala airbase in Rawalpindi on May 10, and two F-16s were destroyed on the ground in Jacobabad. The northern PAF command-and-control network went blind after Nur Khan (Chaklala) was hit at 2.30 am on May 10. ACM Singh also did not include “half kills” in his remarks.

Such was the fear of the Indian Army’s M777 Excalibur shells and Warmate loitering ammunition that Pakistani troops abandoned posts near the LoC and fled. The IAF’s response forced all prized PAF assets to be moved towards the western border with Iran and Afghanistan. For that very reason, an S-400 missile was used to take out a wide-bodied aircraft 315 kilometers from the Indo-Pak border in Punjab, Pakistan. The hit aircraft was a Saab AEW&C platform, though many in the IAF believe it could also have been a Dassault Falcon 20 ELINT aircraft. If that were not enough, hardly any ship or submarine of the Pakistan Navy was out at sea to counter the Indian Navy’s armada, with all enemy vessels moving towards Gwadar in fear of the Indian response.

Although PM Modi’s critics and sundry professors may taunt him for stopping the armed response due to alleged US intervention, the last Indian BrahMos strike hit Bholari airbase at noon on May 10—after which all mission objectives were complete.

Since Field Marshal Asim Munir was DG (ISI) when the Pulwama suicide bombing took place on February 14, 2019, and Army Chief when the Pahalgam Hindu tourist massacre was enacted at the instructions of Rawalpindi on April 22, 2025, it is clear that Pakistan will attempt another terror attack in the Kashmir Valley or the Indian hinterland in the near future. While Munir may get promoted to Pakistan’s President or Field Marshal Administrator, it seems that the Indian Navy will get its turn after all.

Trump tariffs: India has 20 days to avoid 50% levies - what are its options?

On Wednesday, Donald Trump doubled US tariffs on India to 50%, up from 25%, penalising Delhi for purchasing Russian oil - a move India called "unfair" and "unjustified". The tariffs aim to cut Russia's oil revenues and force Putin into a ceasefire. The new rate will come into effect in 21 days, so on 27 August.

This makes India the most heavily taxed US trading partner in Asia and places it alongside Brazil, another nation facing steep US tariffs amid tense relations.

India insists its imports are driven by market factors and vital to its energy security, but the tariffs threaten to hit Indian exports and growth hard.

Almost all of India's $86.5bn [£64.7bn] in annual goods exports to the US stand to become commercially unviable if these rates sustain.

Most Indian exporters have said they can barely absorb a 10-15% rise, so a combined 50% tariff is far beyond their capacity.

If effective, the tariff would be similar to "a trade embargo, and will lead to a sudden stop in affected export products," Japanese brokerage firm Nomura said in a note.

The US is India's top export market, making up 18% of exports and 2.2% of GDP. A 25% tariff could cut GDP by 0.2–0.4%, risking growth slipping below 6% this year.

US imposed additional tariff on India as penalty for buying Russian oil

India's electronics and pharma exports remain exempt from additional tariffs for now, but the impact would be felt in India domestically "with labour-intensive exports like textiles and gems and jewelry taking the fall", Priyanka Kishore of Asia Decoded, a Singapore-based consultancy told the BBC.

Rakesh Mehra of Confederation of Indian Textile Industry called the tariffs a "huge setback" for India's textile exporters, saying they will sharply weaken competitiveness in the US market.

With tensions now escalating, experts have called Trump's decision a high-stakes gamble.

India is not the only buyer of Russian oil - there are China and Turkey as well - yet Washington has chosen to target a country widely regarded as a key partner.

So what changed and what could be the fallout?

India's former central bank governor Urjit Patel said that India's "worst fears" have materialised with the recent announcement.

"One hopes that this is short term, and that talks around a trade deal slated to make progress this month will go ahead. Otherwise, a needless trade war, whose contours are difficult to gauge at this early juncture, will likely ensue," Mr Patel wrote in a LinkedIn post.

The damaging impact of the tariffs is why few expect them to last. With new rates starting 27 August, the next 20 days are critical - India's moves in this bargaining window will be closely watched by anxious markets.

The key question is whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government will quietly abandon trading ties with Russia to avoid the "Russia penalty" or stand firm against the US.

"India's efforts to reduce its dependence on Russian military hardware and diversify its oil imports predate pressure from the Trump administration, so Delhi may be able to offer some conciliatory gestures in line with its existing foreign policy behaviour," according to Dr Chietigj Bajpaee of Chatham House.

He says the relationship is in a "managed decline", losing Cold War-era strategic importance, but Russia will remain a key partner for India for the foreseeable future.

However, some experts believe Trump's recent actions give India an opportunity to rethink its strategic ties.
